Medina Consultants selects Certeon and ANX to optimize remote file access by more than 90 percent
Medina cites Certeon aCelera’s price/performance and ANX Managed Network Services as compelling factors in selection over competition 04.27.2010 – BURLINGTON, Mass. – Certeon, the leading provider of virtual appliance solutions for WAN optimization and application acceleration, and ANXeBusiness Corp., a leading provider of networking and security managed services, today announced that Medina Consultants has selected Certeon’s aCelera software-based virtual appliance and ANX Managed Network Services to significantly improve remote file access over the wide area network (WAN). Medina is an awar...Dear Google - Why Encrypt My Search???
So the tech headlines state “Google rolls out encrypted Web search option”; and with a simple move to https for all web searching, a company is sending shockwaves through URL filtering engines all over the world. Not that most filtering mechanisms don’t offer SSL capable filtering, but it is a more sophisticated deployment; and one where most setups would need hardware acceleration to keep up. According to Google, image and video searches will not be offered through the initial encrypted solution, but this will just be a matter of time. This is a nice slick tie in the Google suite of products, from em...MPLS Costing You an Arm and a Leg?
Thinking about incorporating broadband into your company’s wide area network? You should. Most enterprises are over-using multiprotocol lable switching (MPLS) (and therefore overpaying for connectivity). I mean, if you are running applications such as voice or video which require quality of service (QOS), then fine. But in my experience, many firms which have MPLS everywhere don’t actually need it everywhere. And if you don’t need it everywhere, then why pay the premium. Instead, take a look at broadband. It’s always much cheaper than MPLS and may be an especially good fit for branch or small office locations which can tolerate lower service level agreements (SLA) (although cable is extremely re...Broadband Support- Don't leave your Network without It
In our last blog, we talked about the benefits of incorporating broadband (BB) into the corporate WAN. Now, let’s talk about how you realize those benefits. Really, it’s all in the support. Unlike those more expensive private, leased-line options, BB is not 99.99999% reliable. Come on, there is no such thing as a free lunch, right? Being that much cheaper (for so much more bandwidth), there had to be a catch. And the catch is that BB flaps and dips. You know this from your Internet connection at home. The key to making BB reliable enough for deployment in a demanding corporate environment is having the tools and support to start remediating performance loss immedi...Don't let your information get CAUGHT!
Over the past decade, a number of standards, laws and regulations have emerged that require organizations to provide strong security and privacy guarantees. The end result is high expectations when it comes to cyber security awareness and training, both of employees and customers. Take a look at this Anti-Phishing game. For those unfamiliar with the term, a phishing attack occurs when bait is used to “catch” financial information and passwords. This game brings awareness to the scam, while providing key warning signs of phishing scams. When a user falls for a simulated attack and clicks on the URL, PhishGuru takes advantage of the “teachable moment&...ANX and ENX Interconnect Networks to Support Worldwide eCommerce
ANX and ENX Interconnect Networks to Support Worldwide eCommerce Interconnection of leading industry networks creates a joint user base of over 1,600 companies FRANKFURT, PARIS, SOUTHFIELD (Mich.) – July 21, 2010 - ANX, a leading provider of networking and managed security services, and ENX Association, the governing body of the communications network of the European automotive industry, today announced the interconnection of their networks, creating a global standard for secure business-to-business (B2B) data communications. The official agreement, which certifies ANX as an ENX Service Provider, was signed on July 8 in Berlin after a successful two mo...Aggregate your Frankenstein Network
So, you’ve made the decision to incorporate broadband into your corporate WAN, deploying Internet as a Transport (IAAT) at branch office locations distributed across the country. Great. Now what? Unfortunately, it’s not quite as simple as dialing the Internet Service Provider (ISP) you use at headquarters (HQ). The problem is that, generally, there is no single ISP covering all of your locations nationwide. Instead, in the US, we have a patchwork of telecomm providers and Multiple System Operators (MSOs) broken-down by region and transport type. Want cable in Minneapolis? Well, that’s Comcast. DSL in Dallas? Call AT&T. Now, let’s say you make the her...

Would you buy a cow for a glass of Milk?
Farmers who grow cows not just love their job but they must enjoy it! Otherwise I can’t really explain why they’ll wake up every morning at 4:00AM to Milk their cows. There is something special about growing cows and there is so much to know too. For example, if you want to get the most out of your cow you need to take good care of it, you need to keep it clean, you want to keep a comfortable temperature for it, you need to take care of it when it is sick, you need to know its favorite food etc. etc. When I look at those farmers I am always amazed by how much they know and do. I am not a farmer, I understand nothin...The wedding photo album
3 years ago a good friend of mine from Atlanta and his family drove back home. When they reached their subdivision they noticed their cul-de-sac was blocked by fire tracks, to their horror they saw that their house was in flames. The fire investigator concluded that the fire was caused by a power surge resulting from lighting that struck the house. The house was burned completely with everything that was inside, luckily there was nobody home. The next morning while walking through the remains of his house my friend found very few things that were not consumed by the fire. One of them was his wedding photo album. You can ...Cloud Computing Explained
Looking for a simple explanation of cloud computing? Try watching this video.Cloud Computing - The Devil is in the details
Unless you were living in a cave, far from any civilization, chances are you heard about The Cloud. The next big thing! The ultimate solution for all IT business illnesses. Of course, I am exaggerating but cloud initiatives are backed by major players like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, EMC and others. Cloud means many things to many people: if you take the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) approach the cloud is a hosting solution that will eliminate the need for companies to maintain their own hardware, for others it is a utility service that will allow businesses to consume unlimited computing resources right when they need them ...Thank you for the ……… Spiderman!
At my 2½ year old son's pre-school, every Friday during morning recess their teacher grabs a guitar and plays a song that goes like this ....“Bless you our God and thank you for the …..”, then the teacher will point at one of the kids. The chosen kid will say what he is thankful for and then the teacher sings about what the kid selected and so on… It's truly amazing to see how a 2½ year old kid is really thankful for the one little thing that is so important to them: Spiderman, flowers, my dog, my mommy….man I really miss my childhood!Cloud computing and the 1st amendment
I am regular member of the ANX blog squad, as such I am on the hook every other week to turn in my post. If that’s not enough the other ANX bloggers are pretty damn smart and creative, so there is a high standard to meet in order to stay in the game hence my creativity should stay on high alert all the time. Earlier this week I turned in my blog post and to my horror it was censored by our Chief Blog Inquisitor (that to say my Director of Marketing). I thought it was a great post (and so did he) but it was rated one notch above PG-13 hence could not be publishe...If you give a CFO a Cloud

The case for outsourcing Crisis is the mother of innovation. The history of mankind is full with new ideas that were born during or after a major crisis. On a national level, you can see countries like Germany and Japan, that despite bloody history and major national crisis, emerged to become economic super powers and created much technological advancement. On the other hand, countries like Switzerland, that was always neutral and peaceful, a are mainly famous for technological achievements like the cucko o clock… T...Using the Cloud for Business Continuity
"Affordable business continuity" ranks up there with "governmental efficiency" on the list of oxymorons. Or does it? Business continuity is being transformed by the cloud. The combination of multitenancy, affordable bandwidth, and secure access technologies is changing how companies architect disaster recovery. The elastic nature of cloud computing enables companies to replicate in-house infrastructure and applications in the cloud in a matter of hours. Moreover, cloud infrastructure providers like GoGrid feature variable pricing based on usage. By moving more of the cost from fixed to variable, standby configurations like business continuity have become much more affordable.

60 Minutes Segment on Cyber Terrorism
60 Minutes ran a highly informative story on cyber terrorism yesterday (11/8/09). If you ever wondered how severe cyber threats are to national security, be sure to watch.War on Cyber Terrorism
Have you seen the story by 60 Minutes on cyber threats? I highly recommend you watch it: The Story In a Nutshell Cyber terrorism has crossed over from the realm of potential into the realm of likely. The story provides examples of how power grids, financial networks, government agencies and even defense systems are already being compromised. State sponsored cyber attacks are proving to be the new battle field. Here's My Take:Get Safe Online Week
According to their blog, the UK based initiative “Get Safe Online.org is a free public service from HM Government, the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and partners from the private sector. We help individuals and micro-businesses use the internet safely.” Their website has a beginners guide, some down to earth videos, and great advice for small businesses. Check out their video onSSL/TTS Vulnerability Response (CVE-2009-3555)
There's been much coverage and discussion of recently disclosed SSL vulnerabilities. ANXeBusiness is jumping into the discussion with the help of a special guest blogger, Steve Dispensa. Marsh Ray, who is on Steve's development team, is credited with discovering this vulnerability. Steve is currently the CTO of PhoneFactor and is one of the founding partners and original developers of our cloud-based remote access product, PositivePRO. The idea behind PositivePRO ...National Data Breach Notification Laws Getting Closer
Political momentum is building for a nationalized approach to data breach notification. I think it's just a question of "when" this will become the law of the land. Here's a quick summary of the laws under consideration: The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee recently approved two bills that would require organizations with data breaches to report them to potential victims. The first bill is called theANX PositivePRO Customers Protected from Recently Discovered SSL Vulnerability
ANX PositivePro Customers Protected from Recently Discovered SSL Vulnerability SSL authentication gap allows a man-in-the-middle attack, affecting the majority of SSL-protected servers SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (Nov. 24, 2009) - ANXeBusiness Corp., a leading provider of networking and security managed services, today announced that customers of the company’s cloud-based remote access product, ANX PositivePRO, are protected from the recent Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) vulnerability discovered by researchers at PhoneFactor, a leading global provider of two-factor security services. ...Privacy Warning! Google Buzz Flaw
Maybe not as much a security threat as a privacy threat, but a recent article posted by Business Insider outlines a serious Privacy Flaw in their new application. When you sign up to use Google Buzz, you are automatically set up with followers and people to follow, according to a spokesperson from Google. In all actuality, this is a great usability feature - until you get to the accessbility to your...Botnet invasion at 2,500 companies underscores need for comprehensive managed security approach
The broadly reported disclosure today that nearly 2,500 companies have been victimized by carefully planned botnet attacks should come as no surprise if you're following this type of threat (http://bit.ly/dj7U2v). The ZeuS spyware is widely available to hackers and can escape detection by many standard antivirus programs. What is surprising is the number of companies that haven't adopted a more comprehensive and multi-layered approach to information security. Too many companies believe that desktop antivirus programs alone are sufficient to protect against the growing scope of threats. They aren't. The same can be said about basic firewall protection.&nb...RSA Discussion with Richi Jennings about Targeted Attacks
Targeted attacks are one of the hot topics at RSA this week. A targeted threat is a class of malware destined for one specific organization or industry. The primary objective is to capture sensitive user information. The January attack on Google gmail, termed Operation Aurora, is the most recent highly visible targeted attack. During the show, I caught up with Richi Jennings who is an independent technology and security consultant and we discussed targeted attacks. Check out the highlights from our conversation in the video blog below:Security Trends - RSA 2010
ANX sent four delegates (including our CEO) to the RSA conference this year with learning in mind; learning more about what our competition is up to, learning more about potential business partners, and learning more about emerging trends in security. Here are some of my takeaways from the conference: Attendance According to Tom Heiser (of RSA) attendance was up 20% this year. After a disappointing 2009 this is refreshing news and hopefully the sign of a recovering economy. Themes Cloud Security: The Cloud Se...Facebooks Privacy Policy - Reasons to be afraid
Got a Rand McNally Handy? Because that's what you are going to need if you want to adjust your privacy settings! You may or may not have read my rant on Google Buzz, but as a webmaster for a security company - I take security and privacy issues reasonably seriously. For that very reason, I am about to vent a bit about Facebook. Now, anyone who knows me, knows my detest for Google and Facebook - yet I still use them. Some might call me a conformist. Some might even call me a hypocrite. I do not like to think of myself this way, I just use it as a method of staying connected to friends and family; on the other hand - as a webmaster, it would be sil...And you thought Facebook was bad!
So I came into work this morning and shortly after I had settled in at my desk, my coworker starts calling for me in a panicked voice. I went to his desk, and apparently a friend of his had alerted him to some of his personal information on a website. Not just any personal information either. Information about his neighbourhood, people in his house, income, age, birthday, interests, you name it. Of course, being me, I went and looked myself up. What I found just about made my heart skip a beat. The website in question, www.spokeo.com, spiders social networking sites, blogs, and any other repository of public information and aggregates it. This is just plain scary people! Spokeo is a search engine ...True life tale of Corporate Identity Theft - It could happen to you!
Identity theft is a sore subject to those it has happened to. For most of us, we either fear it; or we think it will not happen to us. This is an all too true recount of a local business owner who discovered that her company website had been hacked. A day by day timeline based on a blog authored by Linda W. Fitzgerald is included here, told as the events materialized. Days One & Two: I used to think that the phrase "cold sweat" was just an expression. But I was wrong, as I discovered yesterday when I sat at my desk, reading an email that a media buyer had forwarded to me. It was supposedly from someone who wanted to purchase advertising on her company's website. The cold sweat started when I ...

Don’t Forget to Add Common Sense to Your PCI Compliance Efforts Harriett Beecher Stowe once wrote that “Common sense is the knack of seeing things as they are, and doing things as they ought to be done.” Most of us take a common sense approach to everyday life. For example, before leaving for work in the morning, we unplug the iron and lock the front door. That reduces the chance of burning down the house or having someone steal your stuff. You don’t need a reminder…it’s just common sense. So why is it so different with information secu...SMBs – Time to Incorporate Pandemics into your Business Continuity Planning
These days when teams get together to discuss risk scenarios, the focus tends to be on facilities (ie What if disaster strikes?) and suppliers (ie What if we cannot get the materials we need to produce our product or service?). Epidemics or pandemics rarely enter the thought process. The recent outbreak of H1N1, commonly known as the swine flu, is forcing business managers to consider risks to their primary resource – their employees. SMBs are especially susceptible to the negative economic impacts of a flu pandemic. Considering that many are fighting to stay afloat as it is, H1N1 combined with the recession, has the potential to create a perfect storm. So...PCI Compliance is a Helpful Hassle
One of my favorite summertime activities is camping with my family. Campfires, hiking, outdoor cooking and just unplugging from the daily grind. We camp in a 30' RV which really blurs the line between camping and staying at a hotel. The RV has air conditioning, shower/bathroom, and a full kitchen. It's far from roughing it! Operating an RV is actually pretty easy but there are some mandatory requirements. Last weekend I finished my annual ritual of preparing the RV for winter storage. It's a bit of a hassle. You need to drain the fresh water s...ANXeBusiness Employees Thank Our Customers

While at RSA earlier this year, I had an interesting discussion with Sean Martin of imsmartin consulting. He was speaking to managed security providers and corporate IT leaders about security outsourcing. We discussed which security tasks are better suited for outsourcing and how companies should select a managed security provider. Sean furthered his thoughts on this topic while attending Interop last week. Sean just published some well reasoned thoughts on security outsourcing in an article for SC Magazine called "Outsourced Managed Security: What should you outsource?". It's recomme...

ANXeBusiness Advises Employee Education and Preparation for Business Continuity with Secure Remote Access to Help Contain the Spread of H1N1 Organizations should look to develop flexible policies to allow workers to telecommute to help protect employee health SOUTHFIELD, Mich. What does “IT remote access” mean to you? IT remote access has evolved immensely throughout the years. 15 years ago: IT remote access was for the occasional work from home sales guy, or executives that needed to dial into a corporate bank of modems. This required patience as documents, presentations and e-mails slowly loaded. Today: IT remote access has exponentially grown as the flow of timely information has become a critical business advantage. Employees, vendors, customers, consultants and others all require access to company information in many places and situations. &nbs...The Importance of Remote Access From Non-Company owned PCs
As I watched reports of the east coast getting hammered by the blizzard, I wondered how many employees wouldn't make it to work. Events like this remind me how beneficial our PositivePRO Cloud-based remote access really is. It's widely accepted that remote access is still one of the best technologies to improve worker productivity. Something to keep in mind when deploying remote access is that more and more individuals want to access company information from their own PC or laptop. This is especially true of younger workers. An increasing number of IT staffs recognize that supporting remote access from non-company issued devices is a requirement. However, allowing such a...Why companies expand remote access to everyone
Employees are really feeling the pinch these days. Cutbacks due to the recession mean that remaining workers are being asked to do more with less. Couple that with general feelings of unease over job security and you’ve got the recipe for declining employee morale. Short of the company getting healthier as the economy improves, there isn’t a magic bullet to improve employee morale. Or is there? A recent survey conducted by Cisco had some surprising results. Cisco was trying to learn how many businesses could enable all their employees to work remotely in the event of a natural disaster, pandemic or weather related cause. They discovered that 3 out of 4 organizations were not set up for sudden e...Natural disasters and PositivePRO
An off topic post for me, but as a victim of the European airspace shutdown thanks to the Icelandic volcano whose name I cannot even pronounce, we felt that it was imperative that I discuss my experience with our readers. By now, I am sure that you have heard of the volcano that erupted in Iceland. It sent a huge plume of ash and dust into the atmosphere where it happily floated over to Europe where I was attending a wedding with my family. Now, I am not here to give you a science lesson, but long story short - European airspace was closed and I was stranded.Contest: Share you funny or harrowing remote access story for a chance to win $100 or a HD Flip Video Recorder (Your Choice)

Red Flag Rules... Ready, Set, Comply!!
Red Flag Rules…. Ready, Set, Comply Part 1: Interpretation On June 1, 2010 the Federal Trade Commission will implemented compliance to the Red Flag Rules. While the official date has been somewhat of a moving target, it looks like June 1st is the final. So the questions to ask is are you ready? As with most regulatory compliance statues they are heavy on ambiguity and light on practical substance. As such interpretation is left up the person responsible for first determining IF Red Flag applies to you and if so what to do about it. The good news is that Red Flag Rules are based on IT Governance which is based in part on ISO 27000:2005 stan...

Superman to the Rescue... The #1 train, going downtown, departed 42nd Street Station. The train, which I was on, had just entered the darkness of the tunnel when a “first” happened for me. The train stopped on a dime with no warning. The people standing (luckily I had a seat) flew forward in a synchronized motion. Those holding onto poles, straps, etc. were no longer able to maintain their grips, and any concept of maintaining personal space abated as people fell on the floor in a blob. From the window behind me, I saw a light racing toward us. Another train passed within feet of the front car of our train, transitioning off a parallel track onto...Place Your Bets

ANX.com drama
It is not often that I make myself heard on here, but I feel that I should address some issues that have been popping up over the last few weeks since our new site launched. As many of you have noticed, ANXeBusiness launched a new web presence early November. The launch went pretty seamlessly, thanks in great part to our operations, product development and database teams. A few exceptions however have popped up, as with any launch. These have affected the following areas: blog, login, registration, Google Chrome and some streaming media. I will address the issues one by one. First and foremost, we have launched our new and improved Media section. To start with, this section will be supplying you with podcasts and webinars that are presented by ANX. It will be expanded in the future to accomodate related downloads (such as slides/powerpoints and the likes). There are also RSS feeds associated with these either as a combination, just webinars or just podcasts. We have also opened this media up to anyone. You are not required to create an ac...
