PCI Compliance Observations From The Front Lines
My name is Jorge Flores, and I’m an Account Development Specialist at ANX. I began my career at ANX several months ago after graduating from Western Michigan University. Each day I speak with dozens of franchise business owners and management staff about the need for PCI Compliance. It is extremely rewarding when I hang up with someone knowing that I bolstered their knowledge on the importance of achieving and maintaining PCI compliance. The sheer scale of misconceptions and unawareness regarding the importance of PCI compliance and the benefits it has on our data security is simply astounding.
Receiving much publicity lately has been the data breach involving Subway. More than 150 Subway f...

Don’t Forget to Add Common Sense to Your PCI Compliance Efforts
Don’t Forget to Add Common Sense to Your PCI Compliance Efforts
Harriett Beecher Stowe once wrote that “Common sense is the knack of seeing things as they are, and doing things as they ought to be done.”
Most of us take a common sense approach to everyday life. For example, before leaving for work in the morning, we unplug the iron and lock the front door. That reduces the chance of burning down the house or having someone steal your stuff. You don’t need a reminder…it’s just common sense.
So why is it so different with information secu...

The Art of PCI Compliance - Risk Assessment
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), is “a set of comprehensive requirements for enhancing payment account data security.” In other words, PCI provides a set of tactics to protect the confidentiality and integrity of data. Great place to start – but it’s only part of the picture. Applying them appropriately requires situational awareness and knowledge of the company’s core values and strategy.
This series explores Sun Tzu’s approach to assessing an army’s readiness for battle as applied to compliance requirements in support of business strategies.
Assess the Risk

A firewall alone does not provide enough protection
I'm surprised by the number of business owners who believe their information is safe because it's behind a firewall. That's not the case anymore. Over the past decade, content-based threats have emerged as the thornier problem. A firewall without unified threat management (UTM) services enabled is like a car without an airbag. In both cases, you're just not protected enough. Cyber threats such as botnets, phishing scams and keystroke loggers are not prevented by simple firewall technology. In fairness, most firewall vendors do offer subscription UTM services for malware, spam and intrusion detection. However, turning these services on can result in performance issues such as longer...

Choosing the right managed security partner
While at RSA earlier this year, I had an interesting discussion with Sean Martin of imsmartin consulting. He was speaking to managed security providers and corporate IT leaders about security outsourcing. We discussed which security tasks are better suited for outsourcing and how companies should select a managed security provider. Sean furthered his thoughts on this topic while attending Interop last week.
Sean just published some well reasoned thoughts on security outsourcing in an article for SC Magazine called "Outsourced Managed Security: What should you outsource?". It's recomme...

SMBs – Time to Incorporate Pandemics into your Business Continuity Planning
These days when teams get together to discuss risk scenarios, the focus tends to be on facilities (ie What if disaster strikes?) and suppliers (ie What if we cannot get the materials we need to produce our product or service?). Epidemics or pandemics rarely enter the thought process. The recent outbreak of H1N1, commonly known as the swine flu, is forcing business managers to consider risks to their primary resource – their employees.
SMBs are especially susceptible to the negative economic impacts of a flu pandemic. Considering that many are fighting to stay afloat as it is, H1N1 combined with the recession, has the potential to create a perfect storm.
So...

PCI Compliance is a Helpful Hassle
One of my favorite summertime activities is camping with my family. Campfires, hiking, outdoor cooking and just unplugging from the daily grind. We camp in a 30' RV which really blurs the line between camping and staying at a hotel. The RV has air conditioning, shower/bathroom, and a full kitchen. It's far from roughing it!

Operating an RV is actually pretty easy but there are some mandatory requirements. Last weekend I finished my annual ritual of preparing the RV for winter storage. It's a bit of a hassle. You need to drain the fresh water s...
